How TRUVADA Works
The drugs in TRUVADA make it harder for HIV-1 to multiply. TRUVADA helps to block HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, an enzyme in your body that is needed for HIV-1 to multiply (replicate). By interfering with the replication process, TRUVADA as part of a combination regimen lowers the amount of HIV-1 in the blood (viral load). TRUVADA may also help to increase the number of immune system cells, called T cells or CD4 cells.
It is important for anyone taking TRUVADA to note that TRUVADA:
- Does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS
- Does not lower your chance of passing HIV-1 to others
- Should always be taken in combination with other drugs for HIV-1
