The combination of antiviral medications prescribed by your doctor is intended to help control HIV by limiting the replication of the virus in your body. Each different medication has a specific role that is important to the success of therapy. Truvada® (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) and is always given in combination with other antiviral medications to lower the HIV viral load.
If you have been taking other anti-HIV medications for some time, your healthcare provider may test your HIV to see if it is resistant to any anti-HIV drugs.
Truvada is taken as just one tablet, once a day with your other anti-HIV drugs. You don't have to worry about planning meals around Truvada because you can take Truvada with or without food.
Truvada should not be taken in combination with Emtriva® (emtricitabine) or Viread® (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) or drugs containing lamivudine, including Combivir®, Epivir®, Epivir-HBV®, Epzicom™ or Trizivir®. Truvada should not be used as a part of a triple nucleoside combination regimen. Click here to learn more about drug interactions.
Talk to your healthcare provider to find out how Truvada may fit into your anti-HIV therapy.
Patients should read the Patient Information, including "What is the most important information I should know about Truvada?". It is important that you discuss your treatment options and any questions that you may have with your healthcare provider.
