Talk to Your Doctor About Whether Truvada Is Right for You

If you are currently on HIV meds, you may want to discuss these questions with your healthcare provider:
  • How many times a week do you find it difficult to take your meds?
  • If you are on a twice-a-day regimen, which time of the day is more difficult to take your meds?
  • Do you know why it's tough to take your meds at that particular time?
  • Do you have to take some parts of your regimen once a day and some parts twice a day?
  • Have you ever thought you were having HIV med-related side effects?
Truvada® (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) may be right for you if you are looking for an HIV med that:
  • Is taken once a day as part of a complete regimen
  • Can help get you to undetectable and keep you there
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Reduces viral load and increases CD4+ cell count
The best way to know if Truvada is right for you is to talk with your healthcare provider. Here are some additional questions that may help guide your discussion:
  • Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant?
  • Are you breastfeeding?
    • You should not breastfeed if you are HIV positive because of the chance of passing the HIV virus to your baby. Also, it is not known if Truvada can pass into your breast milk and harm your baby
  • Do you have kidney problems, or are undergoing kidney dialysis?
  • Do you have bone problems?
  • Do you have liver problems, including hepatitis B virus infection?
Once all your questions are answered, it is important to take a look at any other anti-HIV medications you may have been taking. Your healthcare provider may test your HIV to see if it is resistant to any anti-HIV drugs, and if Truvada may be a good choice for you.
