How Does Truvada Work?

The drugs in Truvada® (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) make it harder for HIV to multiply. Truvada helps to block HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme in your body that is needed for HIV to multiply (replicate). By interfering with the replication process, Truvada as part of a combination regimen lowers the amount of HIV in the blood (viral load). Truvada may also help to increase the number of immune system cells, called T cells or CD4 cells.

Lowering the amount of HIV in the blood and increasing the number of CD4 cells gives you a better chance of not getting serious or life-threatening infections that can occur when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).

Patients should read the Patient Information, including "What is the most important information I should know about Truvada?". It is important that you discuss your treatment options and any questions that you may have with your healthcare provider.
